What Employers Need to Know About the New NCAA Ruling on the Hiring of UNC Student-Athletes for Promotional Activities

By Katie Loovis on July 14, 2021

Yesterday, The Chamber hosted a timely briefing with UNC Athletics on the NCAA's recent ruling that permits the hiring of UNC student-athletes for non-UNC promotional activities (aka Name, Image, Likeness or NIL).

UNC Athletics Director, Bubba Cunningham, delivered helpful opening remarks, his colleague, Marielle vanGelder, provided a concrete overview of NIL and the do's and don'ts, and former Carolina basketball player now attorney and agent Matt Laczkowski of Tandem Sports and Entertainment provided additional perspective.

As far as follow-up:

  1. View the UNC Athletics presentation that provides an overview of NIL, the do's and don'ts, and other considerations and watch the video of the discussion.
  2. Direct any questions to UNC Athletics at uncnil@unc.edu (this email address is monitored by UNC's head of NIL compliance and several of her colleagues).
  3. Feel free to contact an agent to learn more about their role and discuss student-athlete partnership opportunities for your business. Matt Laczkowski has offered to make himself available for brainstorming and his contact information is: mlaczkowski@tandemse.com or (919) 247-6039 (cell).
  4. Connect directly with UNC student-athletes through email (UNC People Directory) or social media.
  5. Learn more. Read the recent article by UNC Athletics called Game Changer: How will the new NCAA ruling allowing college athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness rights affect the Carolina community? UNC Athletics explains..

As always, we hope you found this briefing and follow-up helpful. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
